Adventure & Survival
Adventure & Survival fiction includes fast-paced, continuing action, highlighting the heroic nature of the main character and the desperate need to survive. These titles include action-packed thrillers and harrowing adventures. |
Realistic
Realistic fiction revolves around the problems and dilemmas faced by people today; from acne to AIDS. Addressing the ups and downs of today's life, topics include self-esteem, family life, body image, eating disorders, popularity and moving. |

Fantasy
Fantasy titles use magic or other supernatural forms as a primary element of the plot, theme or setting. Departing from accepted rules, time travel, fairies, ghosts, magic, witches, clairvoyance, werewolves, vampires and zombies are common themes. |
Short Stories
Short Stories, with origins in the tradition of oral storytelling, were the foundation of early 19th century magazines. Short stories are frequently reprinted in anthologies compiled by topics or themes. |

Science Fiction includes scientifically based imaginary elements, often in futuristic settings, alternative timelines, outer space or other worlds. |
Chick Lit
Chick Lit is told in a confiding, personal tone sprinkled with humor; it's like a best friend telling you about her life. Popular themes include popularity, cliques, proms, boarding schools, jealousy and interpersonal relationships in adolescence. |

Paranormal fiction features characters experiencing otherworldly encounters. Popular themes revolve around vampires, werewolves, ghosts and fallen angels. |
Romance
Romance focuses around the central love of two individuals, infused with obstacles that each character must confront in order to develop their relationship. These titles include family, friendships, a first kiss and humorous romantic developments. |

Historical
Historical fiction captures the culture and the complexity of the times presented while engaging the reader in history, providing multiple perspectives of issues and events
of the past. |
Sports
Sports stories are not just about winning and losing, they include themes of character building and values. Issues include teamwork, strength and friendship and interpersonal relationships. |

Mysteries
Mysteries emphasize the puzzle in the plot and offer clues that the reader uses to solve the mystery. Students use a combination of intelligence and critical thinking skills to arrive at a resolution before the main character does. |
Urban
Urban fiction is defined by its location of the urban environment and its subject matter of poverty, racism, gangs and drugs. The characters are often African American or Latino and speak in the tough vernacular of street speak. |
