About the NSLMPY Award

Established in 1963, the NSLMPY Award honors school library media programs practicing their commitment to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information, as well as exemplifying implementation of Information Power.

Each year this award recognizes one school district and two single schools for exemplary school library media programs that are fully integrated into the school’s curriculum. The judging of the winners of the National School Library Media Program of the Year Award is strictly determined by the American Association of School Librarians. Recipients of the 2008 NSLMPY Award will receive $10,000 for each category.

Follett Library Resources has been the proud sponsor of the National School Library Media Program of the Year Award since 1995.

Application Checklist and Tips

AASL member Susan Ballard of the Londonderry School District #12, Londonderry, NH, which received the 2000 AASL National School Library Media Program of the Year Award (Small District category), shares her list of tips for applying for the NSLMPY Award:

  • Obtain an application from AASL.
  • Carefully review application guidelines and requirements. Be sure to select the appropriate category for your program.
  • Determine readiness to complete the application (i.e., assess whether program meets principles in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning).
  • Consult with your school/district administration and secure approval to proceed with the process. The application must be signed by the superintendent or an equivalent officer of the school district (including those submitted by single schools within districts).
  • Determine what information/data you will need to complete the application and secure the information from the appropriate sources.
  • Conduct a preliminary review/assessment based on evidence supported by data.
  • Prepare a draft application and submit it to appropriate staff for an in-house review/edit.
  • Revise application as determined by review process.
  • Submit application by due date.
